Micah Parsons and the rest of the Dallas Cowboys line made life rough for Daniel Jones on Sunday night. He was pressured on 55% of his dropbacks and took multiple big hits. Despite being down by 40 points, head coach Brian Daboll left Jones in until the end of the game. This decision drew a lot of criticism from people including Parsons.
Micah Parsons Blasts Treatment Of Daniel Jones
On his podcast, Parsons was very confused by the decision to leave Jones in the game.
“It’s called protecting your guy — something I thought the Giants should have done. I don’t think Daniel Jones should have been in that game in the fourth quarter. I thought they should have protected him and pulled him out. Barring injury, their season would be over without Daniel Jones.”
“That’s your franchise quarterback, and he’s out there with a backup offensive line still getting sacked and hit. I just didn’t understand. Maybe it was a prove-it moment by the Giants — I have no idea — a learning lesson, who knows. But I thought Daniel Jones should have got pulled out.”
He was baffled why the quarterback they paid $160 million to in the offseason was left to be open to hit.
Don’t Overreact But…
I make it a point never to react to week 1. Fluke things happen and teams that get blown out in the first week of the season can end up being fine for the remainder of it. However, the Giants have to figure out how to protect Jones. While the Dallas Cowboys defensive line is one of the best in the league, the blocking did not instill confidence in fans that they will be able to protect the quarterback at all this season. One of the killers of a season is a bad offensive line. It will be interesting to see what they adjust for week 2.
The Cowboys look like a team that is ready for a Super Bowl run. The Giants look like a team primed for regression.
