The NFL conference championships are set to take place on Sunday. By the end of that night, we will have two conference champions and will know which teams will be in the Super Bowl. This led to the Empire State Building social media team making a hilarious post on the subject.
Empire State Building’s Post

The Empire State Building social media team addressed the fact that the NFL conference championships are taking place this weekend. As a result, the social media team felt the need to make a public service announcement on the subject. This is because they typically light the building in the colors of each conference champion that night. Here is what they had to say:
“PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
We will be lighting for the winners of the NFL Conference Championships this weekend.
REMINDER: The Eagles have been eliminated from the playoffs.”
NFL Conference Champion Light History

For those of you who do not know the context of this post, this goes back to last season. Back then, the Empire State Building lit the building in the colors of each conference champion. Last year, those two teams were the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Well, New York sports fans did not take kindly to this lighting. It resulted in public outrage by those fans because the Philadelphia Eagles are the direct rival of the New York Giants. On top of this, Philadelphia sports teams tend to be direct rivals to at least one New York team in each sport. As a result, many New York sports fans felt that the Empire State Building employees were turning their backs on the city.
Possible Teams This Year

There are four possible teams that the Empire State Building may have to honor once the NFL conference champions have been decided. These teams are the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and the San Francisco 49ers. Luckily, for the Empire State Building employees, none of these teams are direct rivals of teams that play in New York.
Fans React
Of course, plenty of people replied to this post. Most found it hilarious. Others took it as a painful reminder that their teams are now out of the playoffs. Whether the Empire State Building should be lighting the building for teams outside of the New York City area is a genuine question. For now, expect it to happen on Sunday night.
