The NFL’s most popular team the Dallas Cowboys are hoping to come back this season strong from one of their most embarrassing playoff losses in recent memory.
While the team has been exceptional in the regular season the past half-decade, they have been just the opposite in the postseason. According to most of the coaches around the NFL, the Cowboys are going to go downhill in 2024.
Jerry Jones Says This Is A Make-or-Break Year
Following the loss in the first round of the playoffs last year, the Cowboys’ organization has had to rethink everything about the franchise from top to bottom. Owner Jerry Jones has now revealed that this season will determine the future of the organization for years to come. He wants to see how everyone will respond to that loss this year.
Jones confirmed that the loss to the Green Bay Packers was the main reason why head coach Mike McCarthy does not have an extension yet:
“I admit this, the Green Bay thing,” Jones said, via Clarence Hill. “When we lost the Green Bay game, we basically had everybody say, ‘Okay, what are you going to do about this? Okay, this wasn’t just a game. What are you going to do about this?’ And so it got the attention of everything we do.”
It is clear that there is going to be a ton of pressure on numerous members of the Cowboys organization. Pressure can lead to productivity at times, but many coaches and execs around the league think that it will go in the opposite direction for Dallas.
The Cowboys have had no problems in the regular season in recent memory and boast one of the best home records in the entire NFL over the last three seasons. However, coaches, execs, and scouts around the league see the Cowboys falling flat this year.
One AFC scout, Per Matt Lombardo even went as far as to say:
“The (Dallas) Cowboys will finish third in their division.”
Anonymous NFL Coaches See The Downfall Of Dallas Cowboys Coming
Many anonymous coaches and executives around the league were polled by The Athletic about many things regarding the 2024 season. Among all the different questions that were polled, all these coaches and execs were asked which teams were the most likely to “surprise in a bad way” this season.
The Cowboys received the most votes by far to be one of the teams to fall off this season. A specific anonymous executive highlighted the loss of their defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as one of the major reasons for concern:
“Losing the defensive coordinator is going to be a huge deal, and I think it’s a big difference in scheme from what they did before,” an executive said. “They’re plenty talented. It’s just a hard place to win.”
Dallas took 9 of the 21 votes from the anonymous members around the NFL. While the Cowboys have been solid in the regular season, it is highly reasonable that the team would take a step back after such a rough loss in the postseason.
Additionally, many NFC teams are going to be better this season including teams in their own division.
Dallas beat up many bad teams last year while going less than .500 against winning teams last year. Anything can happen at any given Sunday in the NFL, but it would not be surprising if Dallas takes a step back this year according to many coaches around the league.
