In recent years, the NFL and politics have become increasingly intertwined, with players speaking out on global issues. Whether we like it or not, politics is a part of sports, and the NFL and its stars are no exception. As the 2024 United States presidential election approaches and social media becomes more accessible, athletes have not hesitated to share their thoughts and opinions with the public, regardless of any potential political consequences.
On Wednesday, longtime Miami Dolphins long snapper and 2019 CFP national champion Blake Ferguson took aim at the White House’s official Twitter page after they called for a ban on assault weapons. The debate on gun rights and the Second Amendment continues to divide Americans, especially following the assassination attempt on former President Donald J. Trump.
NFL Long Snapper Blake Ferguson: Takes Shot at White House Socials
On Wednesday, the official White House Twitter account posted a graphic calling for a ban on assault weapons, much to the displeasure of Miami Dolphins long-snapper Blake Ferguson. The special teamer reposted the tweet, saying, “Put assault weapons in only the hands of the Feds you’re currently weaponizing? Yeah, kick rocks.”

Ferguson is likely voicing his dissatisfaction towards the White House attempting to nerf gun rights for American citizens while also potentially believing any regulations and restrictions to assault weapons could lead to a police or military state. Ferguson has never shied away from sharing his political opinions on Twitter, retweeting Vice President candidate JD Vance earlier this week. He has also shared his discontent with President Joe Biden numerous times since June of this year. Most recently, Ferguson publically refuted the idea that supporters of Donald J. Trump were flipping their allegiance toward new Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Blake Ferguson: Longtime Miami Dolphins Special Teamer
Ferguson, a prep star at Buford High School in Georgia, won three football titles before landing with the LSU Tigers from 2015 to 2019. A two-time team captain, Ferguson started 52 games for LSU at the long snapper position, highlighted by a college football playoff championship in his final season. Ferguson recorded three tackles and one fumble recovery during his tenure with the Tigers.
The Miami Dolphins selected Blake Ferguson with the 185th pick of the 2020 NFL draft. Ferguson became the first long snapper drafted in the sixth round or earlier since Colin Holba in 2017. A long snapper has not been selected during the NFL draft since 2021, when two went off the board, setting a league record. Ferguson has registered seven tackles and one fumble recovery in his four NFL seasons. He has not missed a game. In 2023, Ferguson signed a three-year, $4 million extension.
