The New York Jets are beginning to enter into the cutdown phase of preseason camp which always results in fan favorites leaving the team.
It is never an easy thing for a staff to do, but the New York Jets and every other NFL team will have to eventually cut down their roster. The Jets will have some tough decisions ahead of themselves especially as many new faces have arguably earned a spot on the team. With two preseason clashes left to go, here are three players on the roster bubble who the Jets may consider keeping.
Can Adrian Martinez Solidify Himself as the New York Jets Backup Quarterback?
-
East Rutherford, NJ — August 10, 2024 — Jets quarterback Adrian Martinez in the second half as the Washington Commanders came to MetLife Stadium to play the New York Jets in the first preseason game of the 2024 season. The Jets topped the Commanders 20-17.
Heading into the 2024 season, the potentially pivotal backup position to quarterback Aaron Rodgers is virtually a toss-up. Veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor was added as an insurance piece in case of injury but has underperformed during camp. Rookie quarterback Jordan Travis was drafted in the fifth round this off-season as a potential successor to Rodgers in the future.
Someone who could pop in and possibly fill the void at quarterback, should an injury occur, would be former UFL MVP Adrian Martinez. Martinez looked solid in his debut for the Jets against the Washington Commanders but also coughed up a fumble he later recovered himself. At just 24 years old, Martinez does not provide the same experience that Taylor would, but he could offer more longevity than the 38-year-old as the backup option.

Everyone loves to hear about an undrafted free agent making the NFL roster after previously thinking their career would not get off the ground. The Jets have a few players who fit that description this season, and in particular, cornerback Brandon Codrington has been one of those individuals.
The 5-foot-9-inch, 185-pound cornerback played his college football at the notable HBCU North Carolina Central University, where he starred on the team. Codrington was a do-it-all player for the Eagles, returning three punts and one kick for a touchdown along with 93 total tackles. The defensive back would play in deep coverage, man coverage, and even blitzing scenarios as he showcased his versatility.
The Jets have wanted to see the same out of Codrington, pushing him to return punts and kicks during preseason along with his defensive duties. Currently, it seems as though a return specialist position would be the way Codrington makes the Jets roster, but it largely depends on his performances moving forward.
Will Kenny Yeboah Survive the Roster Cut in a Deep Tight End Room?

One of the most dynamic and fun-to-watch tight ends recently in college football was Ole Miss legend Kenny Yeboah. Yeboah was a dominant force for the Rebels with the help of quarterback Matt Corral slinging the football across the field. However, since entering the NFL, Yeboah has not had the same level of success with the Jets as he continues to battle other talented tight ends.
Yeboah has played a total of 24 games in the 2021 and 2023 seasons and has spent time on the Jets practice squad as well. This could potentially be the year for Yeboah in terms on making the Jets roster, but it will require solid performances in the final two preseason games. The tight end still needs to prove himself as an all-around blocker and receiver, which New York has been looking for out of the big man.
