The New York Jets have two solid starting EDGE rushers in Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald IV. However, Johnson is coming off a season-ending Achilles tear, and their depth outside of the two starters and Micheal Clemons is weak after losing Haason Reddick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rashad Weaver is the only remaining player to play over 34 games, but he hasn’t recorded a sack since 2022.

New York Jets met with athletic freak, projected 1st round pick

According to Art Stapleton of The Record and North Jersey.com, the Jets visited with Texas A&M’s athletic EDGE rusher, Shemar Stewart, before his Pro Day on Thursday. Although he did not participate in drills, he met with teams.
I’m told defensive line coaches from the Giants and the Jets spent considerable time with Texas A&M DL/edge Shemar Stewart prior to the Aggies’ Pro Day in College Station yesterday, per sources.

Despite his limited production with the Texas A&M Aggies, Stewart is projected as a first-round pick because he is freakishly athletic. The 6-foot-5, 267-pound athlete wowed scouts at the NFL Scouting Combine, placing third among EDGE rushers with a 4.59 40-yard dash, second in the vertical jump at 40″, first in the broad jump at 10’11”, and scoring a perfect 10 Relative Athletic Score.
Here’s a quick review of his collegiate career

Shemar Stewart committed to the Texas A&M Aggies as a five-star recruit for the 2022 season. As previously mentioned, he wasn’t very productive with Texas A&M, recording 65 tackles, 12 TFLs, and 4.5 sacks in 37 games.
Stewart had a decent junior season, posting career highs in tackles, TFLs, pressures, and hurries. He recorded 31 tackles, six TFLs, 39 pressures, 33 hurries, a 12.4% pass-rush win rate, and 1.5 sacks in 12 games, earning him Third Team All-SEC honors. He finished 45th in pressures, 14th in hurries, and 71st in pass-rush win rate among EDGE rushers who played a minimum of 50% of snaps (h/t) PFF.
Here’s Lance Zierlein’s scouting report on Shemar Stewart

“Stewart is carved from granite, possessing a rare blend of traits, explosiveness and untapped upside. He’s long and sudden off the snap but hasn’t learned to weaponize his hands to control the point of attack and bypass protection with go-to moves.
“His bull-rush compresses the pocket off the edge, and he’s too athletic for guards when reduced inside. He can be very disruptive in both phases but requires additional training to start converting his opportunities into finishes.
“The lack of production relative to the traits is a concern; still, players who move like him are highly coveted. While the boom-or-bust label might be in play, it feels like a matter of time before it all starts to click at a high level.”
Zierlein predicts that Stewart will become a good starter within his first two years in the NFL.
