The New York Jets haven’t had the recent fortune of finding the right quarterback in the draft, whiffing on both Sam Darnold and Zach Wilson. While they had a bombastic offseason with the Aaron Rodgers acquisition, his injury during the first game of the season completely derailed their season.
They now have a chance to rebuild in the coming offseason. Rodgers is still committed to playing football for the Jets, and the team is equally willing to address his needs.
However, this also means that they’re going to be moving on from Zach Wilson. The question now lies on what returns they will be getting in trading a former third-overall pick who didn’t pan out with the Jets.
New York Jets could get sixth, seventh-round pick for Zach Wilson
ESPN’s Rich Cimini reached out to NFL executives and scouts to get an accurate picture of what the Jets could get by trading Wilson, and the optics aren’t looking good for the former BYU standout:
The consensus is Wilson could bring back a sixth- or seventh-round pick (or perhaps a swap of middle-round picks) from a team willing to take a chance on him as a backup due to his draft pedigree.
“Perhaps a team out there felt stronger about him pre-draft, and that could influence how they value him,” one personnel executive said.
“(Otherwise), maybe they could ask for something on Day 3 — a mid-Day 3” — meaning a pick in the fifth/sixth-round range. The scout said the Jets could get a seventh-round pick “if they’re lucky.” One of the assistant coaches said, “I’d give up a two-week stay at a Best Western. I’m not a fan.”
This doesn’t present much value for a team that invested a high draft pick for Wilson. It’s unfortunate that the numbers also back this sentiment for him: through essentially two-and-a-half seasons of NFL starts, all he has is 6293 passing yards, 23 passing TDs, and 25 interceptions. Almost no team would look at that stat line and consider him a building block for a Super Bowl winner.
However, Wilson’s performance against the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans showed the high potential the 24-year-old gunslinger still possesses. If he can find the right system that would maximize his talents, it wouldn’t be strange to see him as a mid-tier NFL starter.
However, chances are high that he will burn out of the NFL before he finds a team willing to take a shot at him.
