The New York Jets have signed Justin Fields to a two-year $40 million deal, with $30 million guaranteed. After cutting future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers, the Jets have found their new starter in the 26-year-old.

Justin Field’s Road to New York
For many Jets fans, this move is four years late. In the 2021 draft the Jets selected Zach Wilson second overall over Justin Fields, who eventually slipped to the eleventh overall pick and was drafted by the Bears.
Fields hasn’t quite been the star many thought he would be in the NFL, but he hasn’t been given a real opportunity either. In his three years with Chicago he passed for 6,674 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. He also added 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. But the Bears elected to draft rookie Caleb Williams in 2024, so Fields was traded to the Steelers.

Fields started the first six games for the Steelers and shined. In those six games he threw for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception, and rushed for 231 yards and five touchdowns. Those numbers might not pop off the page, but the Steelers went 5-1 in those games. Despite his hot start, once Russell Wilson was healthy, Pittsburgh decided to roll with him for the rest of the season.
Now for the first time in his career Fields gets a true opportunity and is reunited with his former Ohio State teammate, Garrett Wilson.

Win-Win for Justin Fields and the New York Jets
Earlier this offseason it was reported that newly hired General Manger Darren Mougey was onboard with the Jets rolling with veteran Tyrod Taylor as the team’s starter in 2025. But the Jets make a smart move and signed Fields to a relatively cheap deal.
Not only is this a great chance for Fields, but it’s also a great move for the Jets. New York gets a young quarterback on a short and cheap deal. If he pans out, they can lock him up long-term, and if not he can serve as a bridge quarterback for a franchise in the midst of a rebuild.

The New York Jets have to be happy with how the new era is beginning. After hiring Mougey and Head Coach Aaron Glenn, they also sign a player who could be the franchise quarterback.
