The New York Jets, according to multiple reports, are one of the teams high on Davante Adams‘ list of teams to which he would like to be traded. Earlier this week, the Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver informed his team that he would prefer to be traded instead of finishing the year with the organization.
The decision came after a week of events that can only be described as “weird.” Following their Week Three loss to the Carolina Panthers, head coach Antonio Pierce told the media that it was obvious that a few players made “business decisions” during the game, implying that they were not giving it their all on the field.
Exactly one week ago, Adams popped up on the Raiders’ injury report with a hamstring ailment, which kept him out of the team’s 20-16 win over the Cleveland Browns.
Earlier this week, Coach Pierce liked a social media post that claimed Adams had played his last game for Las Vegas, a development Adams said he knew nothing about and did not know what to say about it. Shortly after, he requested a trade.
Davante Adams Has Been Linked to the New York Jets for Over a Year
Adams, of course, spent the first eight years of his career with the Green Bay Packers and future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Packers traded Adams following the 2021 NFL season because he did not want to play on the franchise tag, nor did he want to sign another extension with the team (the uncertainty of Rodgers’ own future with the franchise played a role in that decision).
Of course, Green Bay then traded him to the Raiders where he was reunited with his college quarterback, Derek Carr. A year later, the Packers traded Rodgers to the Jets in order to give Jordan Love the opportunity to take over as the starting quarterback.
Rodgers’ trade to the Jets initiated a flurry of rumors that New York would try to go out and trade for Adams in an effort to appease their new star quarterback. Indeed, the Jets did make an attempt to acquire the three-time All-Pro ahead of last year’s trade deadline.
Over the course of this past offseason, more rumors flew that Adams and Rodgers were attempting to reunite on the Jets. Both players, however, stated this was not the case. Adams said, at the time, he was happy in Las Vegas while Rodgers said the next time they played together might be in the 2028 Olympics (flag football).
New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Breaks His Silence on the Davante Adams Trade Rumors
The Jets have arrived in London, England where they will play against the Denver Broncos. Meeting with the media this morning, Rodgers was asked about the team possibly acquiring his former Packers teammate from the Raiders.
He responded, “I don’t know how much I can say about it because of tampering. But we still have a great relationship. He’s a great guy, great player and that’s all I can say about it.”
As one can see from Rodgers’ response, he cannot blatantly say “Yes, I want the Jets to go out and get Adams in a trade.” That would break NFL rules regarding tampering. However, it is obvious that Rodgers would be thrilled to be reunited with his former top target.
The question, though, is whether New York would be willing to meet Las Vegas’ steep asking price.
