When it came to the New York Jets in Week 1, most of the attention was focused on quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his first game back from a major injury. The thing is, Tyrod Taylor did much better, as observed by ESPN in an NFL analysis.
In a highly anticipated return to the field, Rodgers faced a challenging outing as Jets battled the 49ers in Week 1. Despite showing flashes of his former brilliance, the Jets struggled against a dominant 49ers defense, which overwhelmed them throughout the game. As the score ballooned to a 19-point deficit late in the fourth quarter, Jets head coach Robert Saleh opted to give backup Tyrod Taylor some playing time.
Rodgers, who had recently recovered from a torn Achilles, played nearly the entire game but sat out during the final series. Taylor’s appearance came during garbage time, allowing him to lead a 12-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a touchdown pass to Allen Lazard with just 25 seconds left.
Post-game, Rodgers expressed gratitude for simply being back on the field after his injury. He reflected on his performance, noting that he felt good after taking some hits and getting in rhythm. His stats included 13 completions on 21 attempts for 167 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Notably, he connected frequently with young receiver Garrett Wilson, who was targeted 11 times.
Despite the disappointing loss, Rodgers is expected to reclaim his starting role in the Jets’ upcoming matchup against the Titans. The veteran quarterback is determined to shake off the rust as he continues his comeback journey, aiming to lead his team to a stronger performance in Week 2.
ESPN Bestows Best Newcomer Performance on New York Jets Backup QB Tyrod Taylor in Week 1 Loss to San Francisco 49ers
Even though Rodgers is projected to keep the starting QB job, there’s no denying Taylor handled it better in Week 1. For this reason, ESPN’s Rich Cimini bestowed on him the Jets’ best newcomer performance in an NFL analysis.
What does it say about the Jets that their backup quarterback was the top newcomer in Week 1? With the game out of reach, Taylor replaced Aaron Rodgers and led a 12-play, 70-yard touchdown drive, hitting Allen Lazard on a 3-yard touchdown pass. Other key newcomers, namely WR Mike Williams, OT Tyron Smith and OT Morgan Moses, didn’t distinguish themselves,” Cimini wrote.
As Week 2 of the NFL season approaches, the Jets aim to avoid an 0-2 start against the Tennessee Titans, following a tough loss to the 49ers. Analysts expect a bounce-back performance from Rodgers and the Jets, especially against a struggling Tennessee team.
It remains to be seen by then how Taylor will perform by then. If Rodgers continues to trend down, though, expect the reserve QB to get more time to shine on the field down the line.
