New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is one of the most talented players at his position in NFL history. A winner of four NFL MVP Awards, it is not a stretch to say that he is one of the best quarterbacks of his generation. He holds multiple Green Bay Packers franchise records and ranks among the top-ten in NFL history in many passing categories.
For all of his regular season success, though, Rodgers has struggled in the NFL Playoffs for the majority of his career. Outside of the Packers’ Super Bowl run in 2010, Rodgers was unable to win NFC Championship Game after NFC Championship Game.
For one NFL analyst and former three-time Super Bowl Champion, those postseason failures have, in his opinion, kept Rodgers from truly being an all-time great quarterback.
3-Time Super Bowl Champion Mark Schlereth Says New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Is Not an All-Time Great
In a recent interview on The Stinkin’ Truth podcast, Mark Schlereth, a three-time Super Bowl Champion during his own playing career, stated that Rodgers’ inability to win in the postseason since 2010 keeps him at the “kiddie table” of all-time great quarterbacks:
“Aaron Rogers (was) a four-time MVP – one Super Bowl. One. The dynasty that never was.
“We called the Green Bay Packers the dynasty that never was. If you invite the greatest quarterbacks of all time to dinner and it’s like Thanksgiving, and there’s one main table and then the kids’ table on the side – Aaron Rodgers is sitting at the kids’ table because he’s got one championship.
“You don’t get to sit with Joe Montana and Tom Brady and multiple Super Bowl winners at the ‘Big Boy Table.’ I’m sorry. Until you find, and I don’t know what the criteria would be, but until you find a better criteria for judging guys…”
Since winning Super Bowl XLV with the Packers, Rodgers has gone 0-4 in NFC Championship Games.
Schlereth won two of his three Super Bowls with the Denver Broncos, who were led by Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway at the time. One of those wins came over Rodgers’ predecessor on the Packers, Brett Favre, in Super Bowl XXXII. Favre ended his career with just one Super Bowl win as well.
Is New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers an All-Time NFL Great?
If one looks at career numbers and awards, there is no question that Rodgers is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time. His four NFL MVP Awards rank second in league history behind Peyton Manning (who won two Super Bowls) and he is soon to become just the fifth quarterback ever with 500 career touchdown passes.
However, if one looks at winning Super Bowls and NFL Championships as the measure of true greatness, then one can see how Schlereth and others could claim that Rodgers is not on the same level as other quarterbacks in NFL history.
Indeed, there are some Packers’ fans who don’t consider Rodgers nor Favre as the greatest quarterback in that franchise’s history because they only won a single Super Bowl apiece.
Instead, those fans argue that Pro Football Hall of Famer Bart Starr remains the greatest because he won five NFL Championships, including the first two Super Bowls.
