When the New York Jets first sent a conditional third-round draft pick to the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason, they thought they would be getting the full services of Pro Bowl linebacker Haason Reddick for the full season. The disgruntled defensive star, who has amassed 50.5 sacks over the last four seasons, wanted a new contract and the Jets wanted to give him one.
However, they could not reach an agreement before offseason activities started. Jets general manager Joe Douglas believed that they could keep negotiating as the summer progressed, but Reddick did not show up.
Nor did he report to training camp. Nor did he report for the start of the season.
Reddick wanted a new deal before he donned a Jets uniform for the first time, but New York did not want to negotiate until he reported to the team.
At long last, the wait is over.
The New York Jets and Haason Reddick Have Agreed on an Adjusted Contract
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets and Reddick, who recently hired agent Drew Rosenhaus after being dropped by his previous agency, have agreed to an adjusted contract for the remainder of the season. While he will not play today, he is reporting to the team on Monday:
Holdout over: Standout edge rusher Haason Reddick and the Jets reached agreement on an adjusted contract. As Schefter notes above, both New York and Reddick are hopeful that they can negotiate a long-term deal now that the two-time Pro Bowler is finally joining the team.
In addition to the reworked contract, the Jets have also agreed to waive over $12 million in fines that Reddick accrued during his absence. However, that does not absolve him from having to pay the mandatory non-waivable fines levied on him by the NFL.
Reddick becomes the first player in NFL history to hold out past Week One of a season and receive an adjusted contract.
The New York Jets Look Much Different Now than When They First Traded for Haason Reddick
When the Jets first acquired Reddick this offseason, the belief was that he was going to contribute to a Super Bowl caliber defense on a team that was primed for contention.
But at 2-4, the Jets are desperately trying to salvage their season before it becomes yet another bitter disappointment. In just the last couple of weeks alone, New York has fired their head coach, Robert Saleh, and traded for three-time All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams.
And now they finally are able to add Reddick to their defense.
There is still plenty of time left in the 2024 NFL season for the Jets to right the ship and contend for the postseason. But time can run out quickly if they do not start stringing together multiple wins in a row.
If they are unable to do so, all of these short-term fixes and new players that they have added will be gone next year, along with multiple coaches and front office officials.
