The New York Jets steamrolled the New England Patriots 24-3 on Thursday night on their way to their second consecutive win of the 2024 NFL regular season. Four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers looked like his old self, completing 27 of 35 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 118.9 passer rating.
Rodgers’ first touchdown pass was to wide receiver Allen Lazard, who caught many such passes from the future Pro Football Hall of Famer during their days together with the Green Bay Packers. It was also Rodgers’ first touchdown pass as a Jet at home.
His second touchdown throw was to Garrett Wilson, who became the first wide receiver drafted in the first round of any NFL Draft to catch a touchdown pass from Rodgers.
New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Drags Analyst Mel Kiper During Postgame Interview
After the game, Rodgers was talked about his pass to Wilson, an impressive throw to the right corner of the endzone that was just out of the reach of a Patriots defender. He was also asked why Wilson has not really received as many targets as people were expecting him to so far this years.
In his response, the Jets quarterback poked fun at famed NFL analyst Mel Kiper:
Aaron Rodgers on his connection with Garrett Wilson:
“The entire focus of all three defenses we’ve played have been taking Garrett away. It’s been Mel Kiper’s worst nightmare. Been a lot of cover 2” 😭 pic.twitter.com/kTFnwE1cuq

“The entire focus of all three defenses we’ve played have been taking Garrett away. It’s been Mel Kiper’s worst nightmare. Been a lot of cover two,” Rodgers said.
The jab was a reference to a comment Kiper made on Thursday morning when he called on the NFL to ban the cover-two defense, or high safety look. This defense has led to a decline (so far) in passing touchdowns and has seen offenses utilize the run game a little bit more.
What in gods name is Mel Kiper talking about???
2-high safeties is ruining the NFL?!

The use of the cover-two defense means that safeties are used to double up prolific wide receivers in coverage, making it harder for them to get open. Kiper, apparently, wants the game to be more exciting and ban the practice, which would make the game easier for offenses.
