The New York Jets may have lost Aaron Rodgers for the season after just four offensive plays. The four-time MVP quarterback may have torn his Achilles while being sacked by Leonard Floyd less than five minutes into their first game of the season. Although the Jets lost Rodgers, they still managed to pull out a 22-16 win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night.
After the celebrations subside, Jets fans will have to face reality as far as their quarterback situation goes for the rest of the season. Zach Wilson stepped in for Aaron Rodgers and went 14-21, for 140 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. The Jets will have to commit to Wilson going forward, however, they were once linked to another Super Bowl winning quarterback.
New York Jets Were Linked To Los Angeles Rams’ QB Matthew Stafford This Off-Season
When the Jets questioned whether they could acquire Aaron Rodgers, they inquired about another former Super Bowl champion.
The Jets called the Los Angeles Rams to inquire about Matthew Stafford’s availability before knowing if Rodgers would play in 2023. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the Rams were “adamant Stafford wasn’t going anywhere.” Rapoport went on to explain the Rams’ thought process:
As two sources explained, the Rams were adamant Stafford wasn’t going anywhere. The talks between the two teams were more exploratory than anything else with L.A. showing no willingness to do a deal, but the Jets didn’t want to leave a stone unturned in their quest for a franchise QB.
When it was announced that Rams head coach Sean McVay would return for another season, the plan was always for Stafford to return, as well. In fact, Stafford comes back with an increase in arm strength and is now healthier than he was last season.
With Rodgers now possibly out for the year, it will be interesting to see if the Jets reach back out to the Rams or any other team for another blockbuster trade in hopes to salvage their 2023 season. While Wilson may be the future (they hope) at the quarterback position, not many believe he has what it takes to win it all this year.
