The New York Jets lost a frustrating game to the Denver Broncos by the score of 10-9 on Sunday afternoon. Despite the Jets’ defense continuing to play at a high level, the offense was stagnant and could not keep their drives going. It is not often that an offense led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers does not find the end zone at least once, but that was the case on Sunday.
Part of the problem on offense were multiple false start penalties committed by various offensive linemen. These penalties killed whatever momentum the Jets had on any given drive and backed them up on the field.
After the game, head coach Robert Saleh told reporters that Rodgers might need to tone down his hard count and cadence at the line of scrimmage to prevent those penalties from happening.
Rodgers disagrees.
New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Clapped Back at Robert Saleh During His Press Conference
Rodgers is known for many things in the NFL. He is one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history when it comes to taking care of the ball and ranks fifth all-time in touchdown passes. One of the aspects of his game that has made him so successful is his ability to draw defenses offsides with his cadences.
One of the unfortunate side effects of Rodgers’ cadences is that, sometimes, his own linemen start moving early, resulting in false starts. This was the case on Sunday.
When reporters told Rodgers that Saleh said that he might need to cut back on his hard counts, Rodgers was less than thrilled:
Aaron Rodgers seems to get annoyed when asked about Robert Saleh’s comments about dialing back the cadence on offense. “That’s one way to do it. The other way is to hold them accountable.” 😳#Jets pic.twitter.com/PUbM2WvCsK

“That’s one way to do it. The other way is to hold [the offensive linemen] accountable. I mean, we haven’t had an issue. I mean, we’ve had one false start, Morgan had one false start before this. It’s been a weapon; we use it every day in practice, but we rarely have a false start.
“And we had, what, four or five today. Seems like an outlier. I don’t think we need to make mass changes based on an outlier game.”
And fans agreed with Rodgers.
“For real, lol Rodgers is supposed to change his cadence instead of the line adjusting?” one fan commented.
One fan referenced how successful Rodgers was with his cadence in Green Bay: “It was never much of an issue in GB over many years. Very few false starts. I have to side with AR on that one.”
“So a HOF QB whose trademark is that cadence call and all his years in GB never had issues is supposed to ‘dial it back??’ This coach is laughable!!” another user wrote.
