The New York Jets had an interesting 2022 season. The Jets began the season winning six of their first nine games. However, the New York Jets season fell apart at the seams and the Jets finished with a 7-10 record. New York had to switch quarterbacks after Zach Wilson was benched and the offense didn’t look good.  The New York Jets recently hired Nathaniel Hackett as offensive coordinator. The New York Jets offense hasn’t been its strong suit and their offense has struggled to show up for multiple seasons. New York’s offense needs to be dissected and analyzed.

New York Jets Previous Offense Records

The New York Jets’ offense has been abysmal, unorganized, and disappointing for a while. The Jet’s offense ranked 25th in the NFL during the 2022 season. New York’s offense didn’t support its strong defense and played a significant role in their demise down the stretch. New York’s offense ranked 26th during the 2021 season. In 2020 the Jets offense ranked 32nd in the NFL and ranked 32nd in the NFL in 2019. The numbers are significant because the NFL has become an offensive league and the Jets haven’t worked on improving its offense.

New York had a chance to make the playoffs in the 2022 season. As mentioned above the offense didn’t support the defense during the season. The Jets acquired Tyler Conklin, CJ Uzomah, and Garrett Wilson over the offseason. The acquisitions were added to pair with Braxton Berrios, Corey Davis, and Elijah Moore. The majority of the Jet’s skill players weren’t consistent and didn’t show up when the Jets needed them. Garrett Wilson was the only player that displayed consistency.

    What about the Coaches

The NFL is littered with offensive coaches like Sean McVay and Kyle Shannahan. New York has a history of hiring defensive coaches. The Jets have hired Robert Saleh, Todd Bowles, and Rex Ryan over the past 10 seasons. Defensive coaches are slowly being pushed out of the NFL. Defensive coaches are smart and can coach teams, but most defensive coaches can’t connect with offensive players. Additionally, defensive coaches can’t assemble a strong offense that can win. The Jets have had a history of valuing defense which has hurt their offense. Robert Saleh has proven to be a good coach. However, Saleh has to lead the Jets to the playoffs and find a quarterback he can win with. If not, Saleh might be fired after the 2023 season.

New York Jets Offense Moving Forward

The First order of business for the Jets is finding a quarterback. Zach Wilson struggled during the season, Mike White is a free agent, and Joe Flacco doesn’t have the arm to win multiple games. The Jets have been unlucky in finding a starting quarterback. Over the last couple of seasons, the Jets have started Zach Wilson, Josh Johnson, Sam Darnold, Geno Smith, and Mike White. If the Jets can find a quarterback in free agency or the draft they have a shot of being more competitive in 2023.

New York has to find ways to win more games. Since 2018, the Jets have gone 24-58. New York has a talented roster that is ready to win. The 2023 season will be a make-or-break season for the New York Jets.
