It is safe to say that trading for Aaron Rodgers in the spring of 2023 has not worked out the way the New York Jets envisioned it would. After acquiring the four-time NFL MVP from the Green Bay Packers, the Jets believed they were well on their way to Super Bowl contention. But, of course, that has not happened.
Rodgers tore his Achilles four offensive snaps into the 2023 season and missed the rest of the year while New York went 7-10 without him. While he came back healthy in 2024, the Jets regressed to 5-12, fired head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, and now are trying to figure out which direction they should go in order to start winning.
A Decision on the Future of New York Jets Quarterback Aaron Rodgers Could Come This Week

Rodgers was not necessarily bad in 2024, but he was not exactly the quarterback New York expected him to be. To be fair, his 3,897 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes this year rank among the best for a Jets quarterback in team history, and are certainly better than any single season by a quarterback for the franchise in recent memory.
But he also showed that his game is on the decline. His 90.5 passer rating in 2024 was his lowest for any full season he played in his career, down from 91.1 which he posted in his final season in Green Bay.
Due to this, and many other factors, Rodgers’ future in New York is up in the air. Though, according to Ian Rapoport, the Jets are very close on making a decision regarding whether or not they want him back in 2025:
“The Jets and Aaron Rodgers have been in discussions about his future and a decision on whether the four-time NFL MVP returns to New York could come as soon as this week, per sources. “
The quickness by which a decision could be reached is noteworthy, considering that Rodgers has usually been given up to a few weeks after the Super Bowl to decided on whether or not he wants to retire.
