The New York Giants took Purdue Boilermakers running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The Giants needed to draft a running back in the 2024 NFL Draft because Saquon Barkley departed for the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.
New York also signed Devin Singletary in the offseason to be the starting running back. For now, he will be, but Tracy Jr. or Eric Gray could also receive snaps in the backfield this season. Last season with the Purdue Boilermakers, he played in 11 games.
Tracy Jr. rushed for 716 yards on 113 carries and eight touchdowns, along with averaging 6.3 yards per rush. He also caught 19 passes for 132 yards receiving and zero touchdowns along with averaging 6.9 yards per carry. Tracy Jr. was a wide receiver with the Iowa Hawkeyes before he converted to a running back with the Purdue Boilermakers.
NFL Analyst Thinks New York Giants Running Back Tyrone Tracy Jr. is an Under-the-Rookie For the Team in 2024
Pro Football Network’s Dallas Robinson listed one under-the-radar rookie player for each NFL team entering the 2024 season. For the Giants, he thinks it will be Tyrone Tracy Jr., the rookie running back from Purdue. Robinson said:
“The Giants have to figure out the post-Saquon Barkley life in 2024 after watching the former No. 2 pick sign with the division-rival Eagles in March. Brian Daboll’s favorite Devin Singletary will be New York’s lead back after inking a three-year deal in free agency, but Big Blue has plenty of backfield touches up for grabs.
Fifth-round choice Tyrone Tracy Jr. converted from WR to RB late in his college career. The transition took, as Tracy averaged 6.3 yards per carry for Purdue in 2023. He’ll need to beat out fellow RB Eric Gray for snaps, but Tracy could become the Giants’ top backup — and push Singletary for time — sooner rather than later.”
There is no doubt that the Giants coaching staff will want Tracy Jr. at some point to be in the rotation at some point for this football team. Some think that the New York Giants may have a very weak running back room with the absence of Saquon Barkley. Devin Singletary was effective for the Houston Texans last season.
A running-back tandem of Singletary and Tyrone Tracy Jr. could work for them. Who knows, maybe Tracy Jr. could become the Giants starting running back by the end of the 2024 season. He was one of several running backs who went on the third day of the 2024 NFL Draft.
