The New York Giants aim to drastically improve their passing game and Russell Wilson’s first year under center, after finishing 28th in passing yards and last in passing touchdowns in 2024. The good news is that the offense features an up-and-coming running back, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and three standout wide receivers: Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Wan’Dale Robinson. The Giants will also count on their athletic freak to take charge at a key position.

Theo Johnson began his rookie season as the starting tight end before an injury put an end to it. He did a decent job in the passing game and led the position on the team in receiving, hauling in 29 receptions on 43 targets for 331 yards and one touchdown in 12 games and 11 starts. Unfortunately, Johnson suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury during Thanksgiving, costing him the final five games.

He currently has the inside track to start in 2025.

East Rutherford, NJ — June 11, 2024 — Tight end, Theo Johnson at the NY Giants Mandatory Minicamp at their practice facility in East Rutherford, NJ.

In a PFN article, Jacob Infante goes through each NFL team’s breakout candidate to watch during mandatory minicamp. Infante named Theo Johnson for the New York Giants. He points to Johnson’s athleticism, playing over 70% of offensive snaps in every game as a rookie, and believes he will benefit from a new quarterback throwing him the football.

“As a fourth-round rookie in 2024, Theo Johnson started 11 of the 12 games he played in before a season-ending injury. Most notably, he caught 26 passes between Weeks 5-13,” Infante said.

“The New York Giants value Johnson; he played in over 70% of their offensive snaps every game he played. He’s a freak athlete at tight end who should benefit from a new quarterback throwing to him in Year 2.”
