The New York Giants tight end room entering the 2024 season is not high profile. Darren Waller was supposed to be the starting tight end entering this season, but he retired instead. Waller was acquired in a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders before the start of the 2023 season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers may have some players to trade before the start of the 2024 season. Pittsburgh made a trade earlier in the offseason by acquiring quarterback Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears.
Bleacher Report Writer Alex Kay Suggests That the New York Giants Should Trade For Pittsburgh Steelers Tight End Pat Freiermuth
Bleacher Report writer Alex Kay suggests a trade for the Giants and the Steelers before the start of the 2024 season. He thinks that New York should give Pittsburgh a fifth-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft for tight end Pat Freiermuth. For now, the Steelers have two reliable tight ends with him and Darnell Washington but at some point, Pittsburgh may want to make Washington the top tight end in the offense.
Kay said about the Giants and Steelers potentially making a move like this:
“The New York Giants were dealt a blow when tight end Darren Waller retired this offseason. Without the veteran in the lineup, Big Blue is set to lean on a pair of inexperienced options in Daniel Bellinger and rookie Theo Johnson.
While Bellinger has caught 55 balls for 523 yards and two scores over his first two NFL seasons and Johnson flashed some scoring chops at Penn State with seven touchdowns in 2023, there is a clear lack of pass-catching talent on this roster.
To address this issue, the G-Men should inquire about Pat Freiermuth’s availability. The Steelers have yet to extend the tight end’s contract, making him a potential free agent after the upcoming campaign.
While Freiermuth is coming off a down 2023 season—he notched a meager 32 receptions for 308 yards and two touchdowns—he’s only a year removed from a breakout 63-catch, 732-yard campaign. He also found pay dirt seven times as a rookie in 2021 and could re-emerge as a regular scoring threat if he lands with the Giants.
Considering Pittsburgh has Darnell Washington waiting in the wings, getting a Day 3 pick in return for Freiermuth could help the team during a critical 2025 offseason.”
The Steelers getting back a draft pick instead of losing him for nothing would be a good thing. The interesting thing is that Freiermuth is only 25 years old. Would the Pittsburgh Steelers want to trade him so soon?
He is a reliable part of the Steelers offense. Outside of George Pickens, Pat Freiermuth might be the second-most important player in the passing game.
Giants Would Do This Trade
There is no doubt that Pat Freiermuth would be the starting tight end over Daniel Bellinger and Theo Johnson in the New York Giants’ offense. It would give quarterback Daniel Jones another vertical option down the field.
They already have an improved wide receiver room. Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson, and Jalin Hyatt will be involved in the offense this season. Pat Freiermuth would be a reliable option for the New York Giants offense. However, the Pittsburgh Steelers wouldn’t give up on him so fast.
