Following their Week 11 BYE, on Monday, the New York Giants announced they benched Daniel Jones in favor of Tommy DeVito after a disastrous 2-8 start to the 2024 season. The Giants benched Jones because of the injury guarantee attached to his contract. If the $160 million quarterback suffered an injury and couldn’t pass a physical during the offseason, they would be on the hook for $23 million guaranteed for 2025.
Upon benching Jones, the Giants demoted him to the QB4 role on the depth chart. He also spent Thursday’s practice as a scout team safety. Upset with his role, he asked to be released and said goodbye to fans yesterday.

That would mean Jones would go through waivers, which he’s likely to clear because of his contract. At that point, he’d be a free agent. pic.twitter.com/xBzc66HMoC

“Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out.
“We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
