New York Giants GM Says “Nothing’s Changed” With Saquon Barkley Contract Situation

The New York Giants and Saquon Barkley are in a stare-down. After putting the franchise tag on Barkley in the offseason, the tag remains unsigned. Barkley is looking for a long-term deal but as of this moment, the Giants seem unwilling to give it. The Giants GM Joe Schoen says “nothing’s changed” since the owner’s meetings.

It seems the two sides haven’t been talking much since the tag was placed on Barkley. However, this does not seem to concern Schoen.

“I’m just going to get through the draft,” he said. “My focus right now is solely on that. There’s no rush right now. I just want to get through the draft, and then step back after that, and see what the roster looks like and go from there.”

Right now the focus is on the draft. After that, they can worry about Barkley. The sides have until July 17th to work out a deal so that gives them plenty of time to work out something long-term.

    Reason To Worry?

Is this something that should worry Giants fans? Maybe a little. The team paid Daniel Jones big money to stay in New York. While he is in the quarterback position, it seems like a slap in the face to Barkley if he does not receive a long-term deal. The longer this goes on, the more likely it is that the team might just cut ties or get Barkley on a one-year rental. For a team that is trying to make some noise in the NFC, contract disputes with one of your best players is not where you want to be.

Ultimately, I think something gets done between Saquon Barkley and the Giants. This happens a lot in the NFL where teams and players will stare each other down and then they will come to an agreement. The Giants will need Barkley in the backfield if they are going to build on last year’s success.
