The New York Giants are in an interesting chapter, as they are about to find out in a few months just what exactly veteran quarterback Russell Wilson could bring to the table.
The Giants’ offense was an embarrassment in 2024, when New York ranked just 31st in the league with an average of 16.1 points per game. The Giants were also just 30th in total offense, averaging only 294.8 yards per outing.
Wilson isn’t a magic pill that will cure all the ills of the Giants’ attack, but he represents, at least on paper, a better option under center for New York than what they had in 2024, when Daniel Jones and Drew Lock were still on the team.
With the Giants, Wilson will be working with a talented and electrifying young wide receiver in Malik Nabers. Having Nabers downfield is a big plus for Wilson, though, the Giants could add another reliable target for the signal-caller.
Should the New York Giants go after $48 million tight end?
According to Tommy Jaggi of Gman HQ, the Giants should explore trading for Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth, who is quite familiar with Wilson.
Landing Freiermuth would give the Giants a significant upgrade over the lackluster combination of Theo Johnson and Daniel Bellinger. Though Freiermuth is average at best as a blocker, he recorded at least 60 receptions in three of four seasons. The only time he fell short of this mark was in 2023 when he played only 12 games after dealing with concussions and soft tissue injuries.
Working out a potential trade to acquire Freiermuth can be a bit challenging, as his current contract will not expire until the end of the 2028 NFL season and comes with a cap hit not lower than $10 million in any of its remaining years. But he’ll be an upgrade over what the Giants have at the moment in the tight end room.
