The New York Giants have not been able to get their roster right for quite some time. Ever since Eli Manning retired, it seems like they have perennially been trying to get their offense right. Obviously, they thought that Daniel Jones was their answer, especially given the fact that they are paying him $40 million a season.
However, Jones has not played well in some time and has struggled to stay on the field due to injuries as well. The whole situation at quarterback has made them a franchise in turmoil and it may cost head coach Brian Daboll his job.
If Daboll is going to keep his job, the Giants’ front office may have to go out and find him a new quarterback, even though the preseason is coming quickly upon them.
NFL Analyst Suggests the New York Giants Trade for Cleveland Browns Quarterback DeShaun Watson
Another quarterback that has struggled with his current team is DeShaun Watson, who signed a $230 million fully guaranteed contract with the Cleveland Browns after he was traded to them by the Houston Texans. Of course, Watson is a controversial figure due to the multiple lawsuits that have been brought against him accusing him of multiple terrible behaviors. His poor play in Cleveland has not helped the way he has been viewed either.
In a recent article, Marissa Meyers of USA Today predicted that the Giants would trade from the maligned three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, writing,
“Cleveland needs a reset, and that starts with trading Watson.
“The New York Giants are in a spot where they need to have a successful season as Brian Daboll could be on the hot seat, same with the rest of the coaching staff. Since giving Daniel Jones his extension he has not lived up to expectations and has held the Giants back on offense. They can’t afford the time to see if he can fully develop into their franchise quarterback or not, making it essential to trade for a better quarterback.”
Interestingly, the Browns and Giants appear to be in the same boat in regard to the quarterback situations but are coming off of two completely different seasons. The Giants finished 6-11 in 2023 and are trying to return to the NFL Playoffs. The Browns, meanwhile, finished the 2023 season 11-6 and lost in the Wild Card round.
Would changing quarterbacks really be the magic cure for both teams, though?
DeShaun Watson Likely Would Not Be Very Successful with the New York Giants
After missing the 2021 NFL season due his legal issues, Watson has played just 12 games. Injuries have kept him off the field, but he has not played well when healthy either.
In 2022, Watson completed just 58.2% of his passes for 1,102 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Last season, he completed just 61.4% of his passes for 1,115 yards, seven touchdowns, and four interceptions.
While Watson’s 2023 numbers are better than Jones’, who played in just six games as well, they are not that much of an improvement. Going to New York would only increase pressure on Watson on play well, and he has not proven that he holds up well under srutiny.
The Giants would be better off pursuing a different quarterback in free agency or taking one in the NFL Draft.
