Early into the season, Daniel Jones was heavily criticized for how he performed in Week 1. Even up to now, fans and critics alike haven’t warmed up yet to the quarterback, leading New York Giants great Tiki Barber to get real on the quarterback.
Just recently, Jones came under fire from Giants fans following a troubling statistic regarding his performance in deep passing. Despite the offense looking more cohesive this season with improvements, including a revamped offensive line and the addition of Malik Nabers, the team has managed only one win. A significant factor in this struggle has been Jones’ inability to complete deep passes.
This season, Jones has completed just 2 of 13 throws of 20 or more air yards, totaling a mere 67 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. His performance in this area has drawn criticism, especially after missing several easy opportunities during the recent game against the Cowboys, which could have changed the outcome.
With the offensive line finally providing protection and an elite receiver at his disposal, Jones has failed to capitalize on these advantages. As the Giants prepare for a critical Week 5 matchup against the undefeated Seahawks, the pressure is on Jones to improve. His inconsistent deep ball performance has left points on the field, and the team cannot afford continued mistakes against a strong opponent.
While Jones has shown flashes of talent, his struggles with accuracy in crucial moments raise concerns as he enters his sixth year in the league. Although his receivers have had their share of drops, the onus remains on Jones to deliver when opportunities arise. For the Giants to succeed, he must step up and make those big plays that fans so desperately want to see.
New York Giants’ Tiki Barber Get Real on Daniel Jones’ Role With the Team
Amidst all the pressure Jones is facing, Giants great Tiki Barber dropped an explanation why he’s not doing so well for the team. His reaction can be seen in an article DJ Siddiqi wrote for Responsible Gambler.
“The reason I feel for him is when you think about his career – this is now his sixth season – he comes in as a rookie,” Barber tells RG.org in an interview about Jones. “He’s immediately replacing a legend in Eli Manning, who is going to be a Hall of Famer. And the pressure on a young quarterback to replace that guy – while he’s still in that room – Eli was there, was hard.
And then the coaching change happens and all of a sudden, you have to prove it to a new coach. And then another coaching change happens, you have to prove it again. You get your contract here and you’re proving it. You get paid after having a good season in 2022, but nobody says you’re worth it,” Barber said.
Barber has expressed growing concerns about Jones’ performance in critical moments for the Giants. Following a recent loss to the Cowboys, he highlighted Jones’ failure to connect on key deep passes, including a missed opportunity to Darius Slayton.
While Jones showed some promise, Barber believes he needs to elevate his game when it matters most. The quarterback must seize these moments to prove he can be the leader the Giants need moving forward, or risk losing the confidence of fans and teammates alike.
