The New York Giants will face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL season. The starting quarterbacks for the Giants and Vikings matchup will be Daniel Jones and Sam Darnold. Both have major question marks about them entering this season.
This is the first time these two teams will face each other since meeting in the playoffs two seasons ago. The win against the Vikings in the playoffs led to the former Duke Blue Devils quarterback getting paid a four-year contract extension of $160 million.
Pro Football Focus Analyst John Kosko Questions New York Giants Quarterback Daniel Jones Entering the 2024 Season
There are many critics about New York Giants starting quarterback Daniel Jones and they have every right to be. Jones has not proved much throughout his NFL career except for winning a playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings. He was hurt last year and Tyrod Taylor and Tommy DeVito won more games than him.
Pro Football Focus Analyst John Kosko questions the Giants quarterback entering the 2024 season. He questions Can Daniel Jones prove the extension was worth it? Kosko said:
“If you look at Jones’ PFF grading profile, nothing suggests that he should have been given a four-year, $160 million contract extension after leading the Giants to the divisional round in 2022.
His highest graded season came in 2020 (78.4) when he delivered 24 big-time throws. He has had 18 total big-time throws in the three seasons since then, and in his 2022 season that earned him the big extension, Jones threw just seven big-time throws to 19 turnover-worthy passes.
The team had success, and Jones was rewarded for it. Now it’s time for Jones to become Danny Dimes.”
During the offseason, the Giants made moves to help Daniel Jones out. They drafted Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft from LSU. New York also improved the offensive line and brought in Camren Bricillo as the new offensive line coach. Head coach Brain Daboll will also be calling plays this season.
Giants Tried To Move Off Of Him
The Giants signed Drew Lock in the offseason. He was the backup quarterback to Geno Smith last season on the Seattle Seahawks. It was no secret on Hard Knocks that general manager Joe Schoen talked to New England Patriots Eliot Wolf about a possible trade-up in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The New York Giants wanted to draft quarterback Drake Maye from the North Carolina Tar Heels, but they didn’t and the Patriots kept the selection. With major question marks surrounding Daniel Jones this NFL season about his play and also his health, they are going to do their due diligence on quarterbacks coming out for the 2025 NFL Draft.
