New York Giants owner John Mara has been criticized by the fanbase constantly over the past several years. Some fans believe that he has meddled in business. At the start of Episode 3 in Hard Knocks on Tuesday night, Mara made a statement that he would have trouble sleeping at night if running back Saquon Barkley left the Giants in free agency for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Well, when general manager Joe Schoen was on the phone with Barkley’s agent, there was a hypothetical about him returning to the New York Giants on a three-year deal worth $37.5 million and $25 million of it guaranteed. Well, Barkley’s agent called Schoen later on and said the Giants were out of the running.
He then asked his agent if he was signing with a division rival. Well, Saquon Barkley did sign with the Philadelphia Eagles for three years worth $37.5 million, and $26 million of it was guaranteed.
New York Giants Owner John Mara Seemed Relieved About Not Signing Saquon Barkley To That Big Contract
When Mara found out that Barkley left for the Eagles, he seemed to have a different tone immediately than we thought it was going to be. John Mara thought it was ridiculous that Saquon Barkley received that much money.
Mara and Schoen spoke to each other after Barkley left for the Eagles.
“We’re gonna be fine,” Schoen said, to which Mara responded: “I think we will be, too.”
Mara wants to win games and he knows that the New York Giants needed to upgrade the offensive line. What this signals is that John Mara 100 percent trusts general manager Joe Schoen to make decisions for this football team moving forward.
There were a lot of New York Giants fans who were not happy when Saquon Barkley left for the Philadelphia Eagles. A lot of fans showed frustration on Twitter, but it appeared as if Mara took the high road here rather than complaining about things.
He thought logically here and not emotionally. There are still going to be questions about the New York Giants running back room. After Barkley left for the Eagles, they did sign Devin Singletary in NFL free agency. He played with the Houston Texans last season.
In Episode 4 of Hard Knocks, it shows that the New York Giants were at the LSU Tigers Pro Day and they were going over final preparations before the start of the 2024 NFL Draft. There will be two more interesting offseason Hard Knocks episodes for the Giants because there are some interesting things that the fans want to see.
