Football fans are getting a closer look at the New York Giants‘ operations from this offseason. This is thanks to HBO’s Hard Knocks: Offseason spinoff show.
The coverage has primarily focused on free agents and trades the Giants have made thus far. In the latest episode, we got a better idea of how the Giants felt about their QB situation at that time. And it wasn’t pretty.
Brian Daboll Not Happy With Team’s QB Situation

In the third episode of the Hard Knocks: Offseason miniseries, there was a scene between Giants GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. During this scene, the two men were discussing potential free agents to go after. This led to a discussion on which backup quarterback they would like to pursue.
With several names considered, Schoen revealed that he would prefer to re-sign Tyrod Taylor as the backup quarterback. You could see Daboll sitting on the office couch and looking off in the distance. Sounding disgruntled, Daboll realized that bringing Taylor back would likely mean no changes to the quarterback situation for next season. This was his reaction to that possibility:
“Great… we’ll have the same quarterback room as last year…” -Brian Daboll
Limited Quarterback Alternatives for 2024

In the above conversation, Schoen did bring up the possibility of signing free agent QB Drew Lock. This was who the Giants ended up signing to replace Taylor. However, Daboll and Schoen both agreed that Taylor would have been the better option. So, his signing likely did not change Daboll’s opinion of the quarterback situation.
Then, there was the possibility of trading up for a quarterback. In the preview for Episode 4, you could hear Daboll being open to the possibility of trading up for rookie QB Jayden Daniels. Unfortunately, the Giants did not end up being able to get a trade done to move up to a higher position in the draft to take an elite quarterback.
New York Giants Moving Forward

Admittedly, the footage we are seeing from Hard Knocks is heavily edited and selective. However, it should be made clear now more than ever that the Giants are not satisfied with their current quarterback situation. This likely puts all the more pressure on their current starting quarterback, Daniel Jones. Now, we will have to see if he can return to 2022 form or if the Giants will be forced to move on from him.
