New York Giants running back Eric Gray needed to have a big preseason game. With Devin Singletary not playing in this matchup against the Detroit Lions, Gray and Tyrone Tracy Jr. were going to see the field quite a bit.
The second-year running back rushed for 52 yards on four carries and two touchdowns. He also caught four passes for 46 yards receiving for the Giants in a 14-3 over the Lions. The weather conditions were rainy all game long.
This was a very good showing for him because his backup spot on the roster to Devin Singletary was potentially in danger. Entering training camp, Gray was the number two running back on the depth chart and Tyrone Tracy Jr. was the number three running back on the depth chart.

With Gray performing well in the preseason game, a lot of Giants fans were joking on Twitter about Saquon Barkley who. Barkley left the Giants in the offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles in NFL free agency. The Giants fanbase is still sour about Barkley leaving for a divisional rival in the offseason. A lot of people criticized New York for letting him walk in the offseason and it will be interesting to see how it plays out in the 2024 season.
Well, New York’s offense will have a running back by committee system this season with Devin Singletary, Gray, and Tyrone Tracy Jr. Gray was a rookie a season ago from Oklahoma and he did not produce much for the Giants.
Maybe he will produce big-time in his second season for the Giants. One of the reasons why they also had good running holes was because the offensive line played a pretty good game against the Detroit Lions.
Gray told reporters after the game was over:
“I just wanted to put my best foot forward. Like I said, I just want to be Eric Gray; just be me. Last year, I kind of made football more than it is. It’s just football at the end of the day. Just being me.”
The Giants will have two more preseason games. This is a good start for Gray. He will need to show out in the other two preseason games for the Giants in order he get consistent playing time this season in the backfield.
