The New York Giants do not have a lot of optimism surrounding them heading into the 2024 season. Tonight, the first preseason game could give some fans hope for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, a Giants quarterback got injured in the first quarter of their first preseason game against the Detroit Lions. Read below to find out more.
Drew Lock Leaves Game With Injury
Near the end of the first quarter, Giants quarterback Drew Lock took a brutal sack that left him shaking off by the ground. After being helped off the field by the team’s staff, Lock did not return to the game. At the time of writing, the extent and severity of Lock’s injury is not known. In the meantime, local sensation Tommy DeVito entered the game at quarterback.
Lock was not exactly lighting the world on fire while he was out there tonight. In nearly one quarter, he went 4-10, threw for 17 yards, and threw an interception. In other words, he did not exactly make a compelling case to take the starting quarterback job from Daniel Jones.
Daniel Jones Not Playing
In other Giants quarterback news, Daniel Jones is not playing in this preseason game tonight. This does not come as a surprise, with Jones not being the only starting quarterback to skip some preseason action.
The Giants have to be careful with how much they expose Daniel Jones in the preseason. That is because the quarterback suffered multiple injuries that ended up making him miss the majority of the 2023 season.
New York Giants Moving Forward
While all of this is going on, Giants sensation Tommy DeVito got an opportunity to show off his skills in this game. Giants fans still love DeVito, as he received loud cheers from the home fans once he stepped foot on the field. If Jones and Lock are not careful, perhaps DeVito could put his name in the mix for the starting quarterback position.
On top of this, many Giants fans were anxious to get a glimpse of rookie WR Malik Nabers. He did make a surprising appearance on the field in the first quarter. Unfortunately, he did not catch a single pass and did not even have a target during that time. Nabers should have plenty of time to show Giants fans what he is made of once the regular season begins.
