New York Giants quarterback Drew Lock struggled during his Thursday preseason game against the Detroit Lions. Lock only completed 4-of-10 passes for 17 yards and one interception. He also injured his hip in the first half and did not return to action. The Giants won the game over the Lions 14-3, but quarterback play was not a huge reason why they won the game.
He will be sidelined for a couple of weeks with a hip injury. The Giants did not sign a quarterback to the roster. For now, Drew Lock could lose his backup quarterback spot to Tommy DeVito. DeVito completed 8-of-15 passes for 92 yards passing. Tommy DeVito looked a lot more comfortable in the offense than Lock did.
DeVito led two touchdown scoring drives for the Giants and Eric Gray scored both of those touchdowns on the ground. Tommy DeVito led New York to three wins last season for a team that went 6-11. Some also thought during camp that Drew Lock could win the starting job over Daniel Jones, but those talks can be put to bed.
New York Giants Quarterback Drew Lock Speaks Out About Tommy DeVito
When DeVito was a sensation for the Giants last season, he had to step up for them because Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor both missed time due to injury. New York somehow made him into a quarterback that could function in this offense. Lock spoke to the media on Monday and mentioned about the fans:
“He played his ass off for this team last year. I went out there and threw a pick. I wouldn’t expect them to be booing him when they took me out.”
Lock is not wrong about DeVito playing hard for this team last season. One of those wins last season came against the Green Bay Packers. Tommy DeVito completed 64.0% of his passes for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions last season. He also rushed for 195 yards on 36 carries and one touchdown, along with averaging 5.4 yards per carry.
With the Giants playing the Houston Texans in the next preseason game, they plan on Daniel Jones starting for them in the first half. Tommy DeVito will come in relief for the second half once again. He can solidify his chance to be the backup quarterback on the roster over Drew Lock.
It is good news for Lock that the Giants did not sign another quarterback to the roster. He played for the Seattle Seahawks last season and was Geno Smith’s backup.
