The New York Giants have built arguably the strongest supporting cast around quarterback Daniel Jones that the former No. 6 overall pick has had at his disposal at any point dating back to his rookie season, but the future at the position may be murkier than ever.
Through three weeks, the Giants are just 1-2, but coming off a 21-15 victory over the Cleveland Browns that saw first-round rookie receiver Malik Nabers have the strongest performance of his young career offering some optimism about New York’s future.
If this season is a referendum on Jones as the Giants’ quarterback of the future, it was certainly a step in the right direction. Against Cleveland, Jones completed 24-of-34 passing attempts for 236 yards with a pair of touchdown passes.
Is 2024 Now or Never For New York Giants QB Daniel Jones?
Legendary former Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz suggests whether Joe Schoen is still the general manager and Brian Daboll the head coach, that this offseason New York may be looking to upgrade at quarterback.
“Even if Daniel Jones plays out of his mind the rest of the year and he plays well,” Cruz told Responsible Gambler’s DJ Siddiqui. “I think they’re going to be in a position where they want to have an insurance plan as a backup if Daniel performs well or as a person that can step in and play if they feel like they need to fill that void or get more production out of the quarterback position,” says Cruz. “I think they’ll definitely be in the hunt for a quarterback that can either fill in – whether that’s in free agency or what’s out there – or go to the college ranks and see what’s available to them. They’re going to be looking for something of the future.”
Much of the concern surround Jones’ ceiling stems from the fact that through five-plus seasons, Jones has completed 64 percent of his passes for 13,112 yards with 66 touchdowns to 42 interceptions while leading the Giants to the postseason just once to date in his career.
Whoever are the decision makers for the Giants next spring, if New York is picking high in the draft, one year removed from choosing Nabers No. 6 overall, Cruz thinks drafting Jones’ replacement will be a top priority.
“I think they’re going to want to get a quarterback that can be the guy in the future for them, be the guy that they can depend on moving forward,” says Cruz. “Obviously, those quarterbacks are typically in the first or second round.”
