There was a glimmer of hope for the New York Giants as they released their young star quarterback Daniel Jones last week and replaced him with Tommy DeVito who fans fell in love with when he made his appearance in 2023 replacing an injured Tyrod Talyor. That hope quickly went away as the whole team’s performance against Tampa Bay would disappoint Giants fans everywhere, and it quickly became clear Daniel Jones was not the Problem with the New York Giants. Tommy DeVito’s performance, and the overall state of affairs for the Giants, can be best described by two first-half plays.
One was when New York’s offensive line just crumbled and left DeVito exposed for a huge sack from Tampa Bay’s Calijah Kancey. To start the second half, DeVito led a promising drive downfield, just for it to stall within five yards of the end zone thanks to a Tyrone Tracy fumble. DeVito started his first game of the season after Jones was benched then eventually let go earlier in the week. Even though Drew Lock, who backed up Jones every week, and served as the backup to DeVito, signed a one-year $5 million contract this season. All of that money is guaranteed to the former Missouri quarterback, which only compounds the problem for the New York Giants. Let’s take a look at what happened in Sunday’s game against the Bucs.
New York Giants Looking Like The Same Old Giants
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers snapped their four-game losing streak dominantly by steamrolling over the New York Giants 30-7. Tampa Bay’s offense was on fire all afternoon, averaging 7.3 yards per play, with quarterback Baker Mayfield playing out of his mind. Meanwhile, New York’s offense didn’t do any better with Tommy DeVito leading the way. The Giants only averaged 4.4 yards per play, scoring only seven points on three red-zone trips.
As the season gets further and further and begins to come to a close the Giants’ next three games will go a long way in determining the NFL Draft order for 2025. That’s going to be a key number to keep an eye on. Strength of schedule is the first tiebreak the NFL uses to determine draft position between teams with the same record. The team with the lower strength of schedule, the aggregate winning percentage of a team’s opponents, receives the better pick. Which, right now, that’s bad for the Giants considering their strength of schedule is one of the highest among teams eyeing the number one overall pick.
How Do The Giants Finish Out This Season Strong
With Daniel Jones out, the Giant’s identity has fully shifted away from their successful 2022 run. Likely destined for a high selection, it seems to be inevitable that New York drafts another quarterback at some point in the 2025 NFL draft, signaling a brand new era for the Giants franchise. Coach Brian Daboll, who’s in his third season with the team, may not be a part of the new era. Of course, if Giant’s ownership thinks he can help the team rebound next year, he could stick around, but I think he’s had far too many chances to get things turned around for the Giants.
New York is ready for bigger changes, Since joining New York, Daboll has a 17-27-1 overall record which isn’t great, so that begs the question when will New York make the real changes they need to get this football team turned around?
