The New York Giants were humiliated on their home field to open the 2024 regular season, amid a dreadful performance by quarterback Daniel Jones in a 28-6 drubbing by the Minnesota Vikings.
Jones completed only 22-of-42 passes for 186 yards and tossed two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Vikings pass rusher Andrew Van-Ginkle, raising significant questions about the former No. 6 overall pick’s status as New York’s starting quarterback.
However, it doesn’t sound as though Giants head coach Brian Daboll is thinking about making the switch to Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito, or exploring any veteran quarterbacks currently available in free agency.
When asked whether Jones is the Giants’ starting quarterback heading into Week 2, Daboll simply told reporters “Yes.”
Daniel Jones, Listless New York Giants Offense Struggle in Opener
New York was booed off the field multiple times by the MetLife Stadium crowd, as Jones and the offense managed only 240 yards of total offense, including only 74 on the ground as the Giants struggled to get anything going from a momentum standpoint on offense.
“It’s our job to give them something to cheer about,” Jones told reporters following Sunday’s game. “And we take that seriously.”
The Giants have a pair of road games, at the NFC East rival Washington Commanders and Cleveland Browns, before they’ll next have the chance to send their home fans home much happier than they departed the stadium in the opener.
While Daboll seems committed to Jones today, it remains to be seen if the sixth-year veteran can do enough to maintain his starting job the next time New York runs onto the field in North Jersey.
