New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll will be entering his third season. In his first season with the Giants, he had a 9-7-1 record and made the playoffs. In his second season, Daboll had a 6-11 record with New York and they missed the playoffs.
Entering his third season as the team’s head coach, things will operate differently with him. Mike Kafka has been his offensive coordinator for the last two seasons and Kafka is still listed as the team’s offensive coordinator, but Daboll is going to be calling the plays this season for the Giants.
The first preseason games for the New York Giants will be against the Detroit Lions. New York did not practice on Wednesday and they had a joint practice with the Detroit Lions on Monday and Tuesday. It got very chippy between those two teams and we will see what happens in the preseason game between them on Thursday night.
New York Giants Head Coach Brain Daboll Talks About Calling Plays Before the Detroit Lions Preseason Matchup On Thursday
It will be interesting to see how New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll will call plays against the Detroit Lions on Thursday compared to offensive coordinator Mike Kafka calling plays. During practice, the Giants are taking more shots down the field and this is how the offense may want to operate. Daboll has not announced yet if Daniel Jones will play in the preseason opener or not.
If not, Drew Lock or Tommy DeVito would start. Daboll said to giants.com senior writer/editor Michael Elsen about calling plays:
“That’s what these (three) preseason games are for. Go through that process. I think every team we play this year that has an offensive head coach besides one, they call the plays. I’ve talked to plenty of people. I just want to go through the process of the preseason, the mechanics of it, the communication with my staff, really in all three phases, plus the people that help me with game management. So that’s much needed.”
Daboll was the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills before becoming the Giants head coach. He helped mold Josh Allen into an elite quarterback. Brian Daboll did well in his first season with Daniel Jones but was injured last season. Daboll also told Elsen about his coaching staff:
“It really wasn’t that much, to be honest with you. I talked to them about how they manage the game, manage the defense when they’re talking to the offense, the kicking game, the decisions. But it’s very similar to how we’ve done it, other than you’re communicating to the quarterback during the offensive series. I have a great staff that you rely on in between series so you can communicate, stay on the line, when the defense is on the line. Be able to communicate with special teams with situations that come up. I have a separate line that I’m able to talk to the two guys that help me, (director of football data & innovation) Ty (Siam) and (offensive assistant/game manager) Cade (Knox). That’s what this is for. A little bit of trial and error, just to see how it goes here for the preseason, but I feel confident in it.”
It will be interesting to see how involved offensive coordinator Mike Kafka is involved with the gameplans for the New York Giants. Head coach Brian Daboll is looking forward to seeing rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers emerge into a superstar. The rest of the fanbase is as well and hopefully, Daboll gets the best out of his football team this season.
