New York Giants rookie cornerback Andru Phillips has been in headlines throughout the week in training camp. The Giants hosted the Detroit Lions for two joint practices on Monday and Tuesday. Phillips was in the middle of several fights between the two teams. Both teams were heavily fined for their actions in training camp this week.
On Thursday night, the New York Giants will play the Detroit Lions in a preseason game that will kick off at 7 p.m. ET at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Hopefully, no hard feelings will boil over to that preseason matchup between the two NFC foes. There will be a lot of rookies who will also taste the field for the first time in live action.
Other than wide receiver Malik Nabers, there will be other rookies to watch out for. Safety Tyler Nubin, tight end Theo Johnson, and running back Tryone Tracy Jr. will be the other rookies to keep an eye on during the preseason matchup against the Lions.
New York Giants Rookie Cornerback Andru Phillips Will Be the One Rookie To Really Watch Out For
Other than making noise with fights in camp this week, Phillips has been good during training camp this year and he hopes it can translate to a game. Head Coach Brian Daboll spoke to giants.com Digital Media Coordinator Matt Citak about Andru Phillips. Daboll said:
“The last few days he’s shown up, so continue to work and have progress with him. We have different packages with different guys in there, but he’s had a good, call it, the last three days of practice.”
On the current Giants depth chart, Deonte Banks and Cor’Dale Flott are projected to be the starting cornerbacks. Andru Phillips is projected to be the slot cornerback for New York this season. With getting game reps against the Lions on Thursday, will see how much he will continue to grow.
Phillips played in 12 games last season as a junior for the Kentucky Wildcats. In those games, he had 47 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for a loss, zero interceptions, and five pass deflections. Andru Phillips improved in every single year he was at college in Kentucky. Phillips could start on Thursday night if Daboll is not going to be playing everyone in the preseason contest against the Lions also.
