The New Orleans Saints, who perpetually find themselves in salary cap hell, might finally be forced during the 2025 NFL Draft to find a long-term solution at quarterback and begin planning for a future beyond the upcoming season.
After Derek Carr suffered a shoulder injury that leaves his availability for the 2025 season in doubt, the Saints could be forced into taking a quarterback with the No. 9 overall pick in Thursday night’s NFL Draft.
That’s especially true given that first-year coach Kellen Moore could be looking for a young quarterback to develop as he begins his tenure.
Why the New Orleans Saints could choose Shedeur Sanders

In NFL analyst Cris Collinsworth’s latest NFL mock draft for Pro Football Focus, the Saints emerge with Shedeur Sanders in the first round.
“I don’t know what the Saints are going to do if they don’t draft a quarterback,” Collinsworth writes for PFF. “Maybe it’s not Shedeur that they like, but he seems to be the next one on the board. I did almost go with LSU’s Will Campbell here, though.”

Sanders is among the more polarizing quarterback prospects in this year’s class, especially following reports that private meetings and interviews did not do the Colorado standout any favors during the pre-draft process.
However, in a class that’s largely devoid of elite quarterback prospects, Sanders could be a strong fit for the Saints after passing for 4,134 yards with 37 touchdowns to 10 interceptions last season, which could be a best case scenario for New Orleans given it can reset its salary cap situation at quarterback, traditionally the most important and most expensive position on a roster.
