The New Orleans Saints were $80 million over the cap entering the offseason and have been restructuring contracts nonstop to get under the cap.
New Orleans started today with approximately $32 million against the cap.
Thankfully, their right guard agreed to restructure his contract.
The New Orleans Saints restructured the contract of their right guard
According to Spotrac, New Orleans restructured the contract of Cesar Ruiz.
The team has converted his $8 million roster bonus into a signing bonus, adding a void year, and freeing up $6.4 million in cap space.
As a result, his $8 million roster bonus will be spread evenly by $1.6 million for the next five years, and his cap number for 2024 will drop from $10.85 million to $4.45 million.
Finally, his base salary of $9.15 million for 2025 will be fully guaranteed because he will remain on the team beyond March 17, 2023.
Ruiz signed a 4-year extension during the season
New Orleans declined Cesar Ruiz’s 5th-year option on May 1, worth $14 million for the 2024 season.
Knowing that a long-term extension at a lower rate is the better move, both parties agreed to a 4-year, $44 million contract extension on September 9.
Ruiz appeared in 16 games. He had two penalties, five sacks allowed, and a 51.2 PFF Grade.
Expect more roster moves in the coming weeks
New Orleans is roughly $26 million over the cap and expect the team to make more roster moves by restructuring or releasing players to get under the cap.
Notable players who are expected to restructure their contracts or get released include Ryan Ramczyk, Cameron Jordan, Alvin Kamara, Demario Davis, Taysom Hill, Tyrann Mathieu, Marcus Maye, and Juwan Johnson, to name a few.
