New Orleans Saints: Land Former ACC Star to Boost Offensive Tackle Depth

The New Orleans Saints face an offensive tackle dilemma and have thin depth at the position with less than two weeks remaining until the start of the regular season. Trevor Penning may not be ready for Week 1 due to turf toe, which would cause projected swing tackle Dillon Radunz to slide inside to left guard. To make matters worse, Landon Young was carted off the field in the final preseason game with an ankle injury and may begin the year on injured reserve, further complicating things.

According to Adam Schefter, the New Orleans Saints and the Dallas Cowboys have agreed to a single-player trade and a late-round pick swap. The Saints acquire former North Carolina Tar Heel Asim Richards and a 2028 seventh-round pick, while the Cowboys receive a 2028 sixth-round pick. Finally, New Orleans will inherit the final two years of Richards’ rookie contract.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Asim Richards 169th overall in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He has served as the team’s third-string offensive tackle during each of his first two seasons. Richards started one game at left tackle in 2024 and finished the season with six pressures, four hurries, one quarterback hit, and one sack allowed across 13 games and 181 offensive snaps, according to PFF.

He competed against Nate Thomas and Geron Christian Sr. for the swing tackle role heading into his third season. Ultimately, the former ACC star lost the battle, and the Cowboys were hoping to receive draft compensation rather than cutting him outright.
