It has officially been reported that the New Houston Texans head coach is a done deal. It was reported by Adam Shefter on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. The former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator has been hired as the Houston Texans head coach ahead of the 2023 season.

DeMeco Ryans played for the Houston Texans from 2006 to 2011 as a linebacker. Following his time playing football, he moved on to coach in 2017, after finishing his career with the Philadelphia Eagles. He began his coaching career as the San Francisco 49ers’ defensive quality control coach. From there, he was the linebackers coach for three years. For the past two seasons, Ryans was the defensive coordinator for the 49ers, and both years they went to the NFC Championship game.

The deal was confirmed by Adam Schefter on Twitter to be a six-year deal for the new Houston Texans head coach. The Texans went 3-13-1 in the 2022 season and are set to have the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Many mock drafts have the Texans picking Alabama quarterback Bryce Young. The team will hopefully finally be getting their franchise quarterback.

Demeco Ryans will also be expected as a defensive mind to buff up the defense. There will be a couple of notable free agents that played for the 49ers’ defense in 2022. It can be expected that at least some of them will go with Ryans if the deal is right. Some notable free agents could include, safety Jimmie Ward and linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair.

This also will now mean the San Francisco 49ers are in the hunt after losing yet another defensive coordinator to a head coaching position. The Houston Texans are also expected to have over $37 million in cap space, giving the new head coach room to work with.
