With only one win on their record, the New England Patriots are considering Drake Maye to start as quarterback to change their fortunes. For former NFL wide receiver Julian Edelman, though, the rookie must prove that he deserves the job first before actually getting it.
After a tough 30-13 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers, Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that Jacoby Brissett will retain his position as the starting quarterback. Despite mounting pressure from fans to give Maye a chance, Mayo emphasized the team’s commitment to Brissett, citing his leadership qualities.
Brissett faced a challenging game, getting sacked six times and pressured heavily behind a struggling offensive line, especially after losing center David Andrews early in the match. He threw his first interception of the season, which was returned for a touchdown, and fumbled three times, contributing to the team’s ongoing offensive struggles.
Despite these setbacks, Brissett remains optimistic, encouraging teammates to stay hopeful about the season’s potential. Mayo acknowledged that while the team is constantly evaluating player performance, bringing Maye into the lineup prematurely could hinder his development given the current state of the offensive line.
What New England Patriots’ Drake Maye Must Do To Get Starting Quarterback Job According to Julian Edelman
At this point in time, a lot of Patriots fans are clamoring Maye to be made the team’s starting quarterback. In an article written by DJ Siddiqi for Responsible Gambler, Edelman said that the rookie has to do something first before getting the job.
“I don’t know when he’s going to be the starter,” says Edelman in a one-on-one interview with RG.org on behalf of his partnership with Tostitos. “That’s for them to make the decision. He needs to be able to show that in practice. He needs to show that in meetings, he needs to show that with his demeanor. If you’re going to be the starting quarterback for the Patriots, that’s gotta to be seen consistently before you just throw him in and into the fire.”
Although Maye showed promise in practice and had a brief appearance in Week 3, Mayo believes that exposing him to the current chaos could be detrimental. With the Patriots sitting at 1-3, the coaching staff must weigh the risks of a rookie quarterback against the need for stability.
For now, Brissett will lead the team against the Miami Dolphins, but the coaching staff’s decision-making will be crucial as the season progresses. Patriots fans should keep an eye out on the situation to ascertain any clues on whether Maye will get the quarterback job from Brissett or not.
