The New England Patriots are looking for a bounce-back season. The defense was dominant but the offense sputtered throughout the season. Part of this may have been offensive coordinator Matt Patricia who was clearly in over his head. However, questions have come up about Mac Jones and according to head coach Bill Belichick, he does not have the starting role locked up.

New England Patriots: Mac Jones Starting Job In Jeopardy?
Bill Belichick was asked this week who would start, Jones or Bailey Zappe. In true Belichick form, he didn’t really answer the question but did provide some insight.
“Everybody will get a chance to play. We’ll play the best players….Everybody that’s on our roster, if they earn the opportunity to play, then based on what they do in practice and all that, then they’ll get an opportunity to play.”
It seems like there will be an open competition in camp. The Patriots have always operated under the idea of the best players playing. If Zappe has a strong training camp and Jones doesn’t improve, Belichick will go with the better player.

Clash With The Owner?
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft came out in strong support of Mac Jones this week. Kraft pointed to the issues with the offense in terms of coaching. He seemed to indicate that it was not Jones’ fault and that he will actually be a great quarterback if given a better offense to work within. If Belichick decides to start Zappe, he might have the owner in his ear which could lead to some problems down the road.
After decades of excellence in New England, the cracks are starting to show. The Patriots have a tall task ahead of them in a tough AFC conference and AFC East division. If the team underperforms again, there could be some big changes coming to New England.
