The New England Patriots are off to a brutal start in Jerod Mayo’s first year as the team’s head coach. After he called his team ‘soft’ after a sixth straight loss, his former coach, Bill Belichick, harshly criticized him.
Bill Belichick Ripped Jerod Mayo For Post Game Comments
Belichick had a lot to say about Mayo’s comments and called his team soft after they could not stop the run at all against the Jacksonville Jaguars. They ran all day on the New England Defense which is now 25th overall in total yards allowed so far.
Here is what Belichick had to say about those comments that Mayo made:

“Hey coach have you ever had a soft team?”

“When you criticize your team publicly like that, it doesn’t always go over well,” Belichick said. “Every coach has their own style, and maybe sometimes that can be effective and all. But ultimately, I always felt that when the team played bad, that was my responsibility.”
Bill knows a thing or two about those players in the locker room so for him to say this is not a great look for Mayo while he tries to gain some games under his belt as a rookie head coach. Those comments from Bill clearly had an impact on Mayo as he has now changed his tune.
Jerod Mayo Walks Back ‘Soft’ Comment
Mayo is taking a page out of the Patriots’ former coach Belichick by focusing all the attention on the next game in front of them.
In general this year for the Patriots is really a tryout in many ways as they have a rookie head coach and quarterback and not a great roster. This team will have by far the most cap space this off-season and will have great draft picks to work with. For now, however, Mayo is trying to focus on the game in front of them and to try and get better each day:
“It’s all about the Jets and we’re moving forward. Obviously there’s a lot of noise out there,” Mayo said, per PatsPulpit’s Brian Hines. “We are what our record is and we have to get better, and that ultimately is my responsibility. I take all the blame.”
