The New England Patriots are still trying to figure out who will be the starting quarterback to open up the 2024 regular season. The team had originally planned on veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett to start the year, with rookie Drake Maye serving as the backup. However, Brissett suffered a right shoulder injury in New England’s final preseason matchup against the Washington Commanders, allowing Maye to get some more playing time in which he put on a great show.
New England Patriots Give Injury Update
The veteran quarterback did not return to the action, putting his future availability in question. However, according to head coach Jerod Mayo, Brissett could have returned to the game if the team wanted him to, and that they were just taking precautions.
He would’ve been able to continue… He said he was good.
Coach Jerod Mayo: “He would've been able to continue. … He said he was good.”
The team will check on Brissett tomorrow, as well. https://t.co/tLvWNeyfYV

Jacoby Brissett Still QB1
The vibe in the Patriots’ quarterback room this preseason has been if Brissett is outperformed by Maye or cannot play due to injury, the rookie would get the starting position. Now, the injury angle might still be in play, however, if what Mayo said holds, Brissett, will still be the starter come the first game of the regular season.
Drake Maye
Maye had a strong outing in the team’s final preseason game, amounting to 126 passing yards and a touchdown, going 13 of 20 on his passing attempts. His overall numbers for the preseason are 192 passing yards for a touchdown, going for 21 of 34 on his passing attempts.
While the rookie quarterback has shown some promise, the team looks like it is still leaning towards starting Brissett for the season opener, as long as his injury does not affect his play.
Do you think that Maye or Brissett will be the week one starter?
