As Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported early Saturday morning, the New England Patriots plan to give rookie head coach Jerod Mayo another shot at being the team’s head coach for the 2025 season. However, as Rapoport and Pelissero pointed out, the Patriots could move on from Mayo if a “calamity” were to take place in their final two games. Entering Week 17, the Patriots currently have the second pick of the 2025 NFL Draft with a 3-12 record.
“Patriots owner Robert Kraft spent years preparing for Jerod Mayo to be Bill Belichick’s successor, even writing it into Mayo’s contract,” Rapoport and Pelissero said. “Barring some type of calamity over the final two games of the campaign, the expectation is Kraft gives Mayo another season to prove him right.”
The New England Patriots were embarrassed at Gillette Stadium
The Patriots hosted the Chargers at Gillette Stadium for Week 17 and were absolutely destroyed at home, losing 40-7 and falling to 3-13. The Chargers’ offense dominated the Patriots’ defense, which had been a strength when Bill Belichick was their head coach. They couldn’t stop the pass or the run and failed to put pressure on Justin Herbert throughout the game. The defense gave up 428 total yards, 281 passing yards, 147 rushing yards, 29 first downs, 10/17 on third down, 2/2 on fourth down, and recorded zero sacks while being on the field for a staggering 40 minutes and 34 seconds.
The Patriots’ offense couldn’t get into a consistent rhythm in the passing and running game all game as the offensive line struggled to protect rookie quarterback Drake Maye. The offense accounted for 181 total yards, 85 passing yards, 96 rushing yards, 12 first downs, 2/10 on third down, and 0/3 on fourth down while allowing four sacks, and was on the field for only 19 minutes and 26 seconds.
To make matters worse, fans at Gillette Stadium were shouting “Fire Mayo” in the fourth quarter.

Many Patriots fans agreed with the chant on social media, calling for the firing of Jerod Mayo

I would say fire Jerod Mayo on the spot, but we need him to lose to the Bills backups to secure the #2 pick.

Fire Jerod Mayo if you guys have any care about being competitive 🤷🏻♂️
— Austin Konenski (@AustinKonenski) December 28, 2024
Patriots have to fire Jerod Mayo. There is not one person in New England who wants him to have the job in 2025.
Get a real head coach for Drake Maye and Travis Hunter. This has been ridiculous.

“You have me on record. That we are going to win more than four games. I’m on record,” Mayo said confidently.#NEPats #firemayo#firewolf#selltheteam

If Kraft doesn’t fire Mayo before he leaves the stadium today it’s clear ownership doesn’t care at all about winning anymore. This is absolutely pathetic @Patriots

I had such high hopes for Mayo. I thought he would be a GREAT coach
It has been entirely the opposite. Handles the media poorly, preps the team poorly, in game adjustments are non existent, throws others under the bus…the list goes on
Have to fire him. And Wolfe

Dear Bob Kraft,
Would you say this game qualifies as a “calamity?”
FIRE MAYO and CO. or waste Drake Maye!
Sincerely,
