The New England Patriots working on an extension
The New England Patriots were close to making the playoffs in 2023. But the team fell short in quarterback Mac Jones’ second season. The team made critical changes to the structure of the coaching staff for next season. Now the team is working on assembling a competitive roster for 2023.
According to Mark Daniels with Mass Live, the Patriots are working on a new contract with cornerback Jonathan Jones.

It's still considered likely he'll hit the free-agent market. Jones is one of the fastest players in the NFL and will have teams looking at him.https://t.co/9B2tVEgaeB pic.twitter.com/KBiMctoyDf

The team would have until 4 pm Tuesday to apply the franchise tag to Jones. That appears unlikely to happen. Jones is considered a top free agent in the 2023 cornerback free agent market.
Per league sources, the expectations are that there will be a number of suitors for #Patriots cornerback Jon Jones. He's still viewed by most team I talked to as a slot CB, but his performance as an outside CB this year only served to heighten awareness about his talent.

Jones has won two Super Bowls as a member of the Patriots. The undrafted free agent has earned his keep in the NFL. Jones recorded 57 total tackles, 17 stops, and four interceptions during the 2022 season. He earned a 68.1 overall grade by Pro Football Focus.
