The New England Patriots reworked Jonnu Smith’s massive four-year $50 million dollar contract Friday afternoon.
The agreement was that of turning his $7.965 million dollar base salary into a bonus which in turn created $5.31 million in space for the upcoming 2022 season.
This move shouldn’t come as a surprise since he posted shockingly low numbers compared to the previous season. At the end of his first season in New England, he was only able to catch 28 of his 45 targets for a mere 294 yards and a single touchdown. These stats come as a surprise when you look at his 2020 season stats. Throughout the 2020 season, he was able to bring in 41 out of 65 receptions while also getting 448 yards and hauling in eight touchdowns. In addition to the sudden decline in the passing game came his failure to look like the pass/run blocker also seemed to vanish. In 2020 he only allowed one missed block and those numbers skyrocketed to 13 in the 2021 season.
Heading into the 2022 season Jonnu Smith should feel a sense of worry in the air. He is already slated behind the Patriot’s other tightened splash of the 2021 season, Hunter Henry. A player who undoubtedly had a superior season in 2021 with 603 yards and was second on the team with nine touchdowns. In addition, the fact he is already restructuring means they lost faith in his ability, and looks like he’s entering a make-or-break season.
