Buffalo Bills wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling

2 NFL Teams Emerge as Fan-Favorites to Sign MVS After Release from Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills shocked the NFL world on Tuesday by acquiring five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns. In a corresponding move, they released two-time Super Bowl Champion Marquez Valdes-Scantling (MVS). It was the second of three major trades that happened during the day, a rare occurrence for the league.

First, the New York Jets sent a conditional third-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for three-time All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams, reuniting him with his former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers. After the Cooper deal was announced, the Minnesota Vikings acquired running back Cam Akers from the Houston Texans. Akers played six games for the Vikings last season following a midseason trade from the Los Angeles Rams.

While Cooper, Adams, and Akers now have new teams, MVS is now a free agent. And fans have two teams in mind of him.

New York Jets Fans Want to Reunite MVS with Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams

As mentioned previously, the Jets acquired Adams from the Raiders early in the day on Tuesday. With the news of MVS’ release from the Bills following the Cooper trade, New York fans (and some Packers fans) all had the same idea: give Rodgers another one of his former Green Bay pass catchers:

Valdes-Scantling, Adams, and Rodgers were all teammates on the Green Bay Packers from 2018-2021. At the end of the 2021 season, Adams was traded to the Raiders and MVS signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in free agency.

Rodgers was traded to the Jets a year later. Of course, adding Valdes-Scantling would also reunite the wide receiver with Allen Lazard, who also joined Green Bay in 2018.

Kansas City Chiefs Fans Expect the Team to Sign MVS, but Do Not Want Them to

Of course, Valdes-Scantling’s previous team, the Chiefs, are also a favorite to sign the two-time Super Bowl Champion, especially since they have suffered so many injuries on offense. He knows the offense, has proven to be valuable in the postseason, and can stretch the field.

Fans, though, do not want him back:

The Chiefs previously released MVS because, frankly, he did not play well enough to be worth his $10 million annual salary. Given the fact that the team has questionable wide receiver depth, though, they may be interested in bringing him back for a far lesser amount.

That being said, Kansas City is 5-0 despite all the injuries. Perhaps they will decide that they are comfortable with the wide receiver room as it is.
