West Virginia enters week three still searching for their first win of the season. Safe to say most fans didn’t think they would be sitting at 0-2 at this stage, but the future is still uncertain. Will the Mountaineers be able to play a mistake-free game and notch their first win against Towson University? It will be up to the team to put together a better all-around performance to pick up the win.
Freshman Earn Playing Time
During his press conference this week, Head Coach Neal Brown suggested that changes are coming. Part of these adjustments will see a couple of freshmen get some playing time on defense this weekend. Mumu Bin-Wahad is slated to get snaps in the secondary at safety. The Georgia native had a solid fall camp. This Saturday he may make a case for more playing time going forward. According to 247 sports, the highest rated player in the 2022 class, Jacolby Spells, will get some playing time at corner. The former four-star prospect chose the Mountaineers over offers from Miami, LSU, Georgia, among others. West Virginia will be hoping the freshman duo can hit the ground running and offer some support to the struggling defense.
Defense Needs a Strong Performance
It’s no secret that the Mountaineer defense has been underperforming thus far. They will have a chance to showcase a top-notch performance this weekend against a Towson team that hasn’t been strong on offense. While the Tigers’ offense wasn’t overly impressive in their win against Bucknell in week one, last week saw better production from Towson. As they took down rival Morgan State with a score of 29-21, Towson quarterback Tyrell Pigrome threw for 157 yards while adding 124 rushing yards. What does that mean for the Mountaineers? Meaning, for the second week in a row, the pressure will be on WVU to stop a mobile quarterback.
