The Pittsburgh Steelers lost to the New England Patriots 17-14 in their week two home opener. This leads to a lot of questions surrounding the Steelers offense and Mitch Trubisky. How much of the offensive output is on Mitch and how much is on Matt Canada? Let’s dive into it.
Mitch Trubisky Performance
Mitch Trubisky against the Patriots went 21/33, 168 yards and 1 touchdown 1 interception. Not a terrible stat line considering how it looked. Overall the offense yet again looked very stale not very exciting. It was about halftime I said to myself “This game is boring”. At this point I wonder, how much was the slow offensive outputs last year really on Ben Roethlisberger? Last year the only sustained drives were when the offense went into the 2-minute offense. Looks a lot similar this year with a different quarterback under center.
Mitch Trubisky took a lot of blame during his post game press conference. Here is my opinion, he did not lose the game, this game is not on him. With that being said he also did not win the game either with multiple opportunities. All game long receivers were running open and waving their hands getting impatient with Trubisky’s lack of field vision. He simply seems overwhelmed and twitchy. He looks to be only looking for the first read and if its not there he immediately takes the check down. Yet another week of not targeting the middle nearly enough to back the defense off. The most frustrating thing about this is we as fans do not know where the real problem is. Is it Mitch and his decision making or is it Matt Canada’s offensive scheme.
Conclusion
In my opinion I think both Mitch and Matt Canada can both do better and need to in order to win consistently. I don’t know if I have faith at this point that the Steelers can turn it around with Mitch Trubisky. I know it is only week two however, this is the same lack of explosiveness we saw in preseason as if it’s by design. Mitch is a check down king and makes bone head plays rolling out and taking the loss or no gain of yards. I don’t know how many times I can watch them take a short check down on a third and long. On a short week with the Steelers playing Cleveland on Thursday night football something has to change. Could a Kenny Pickett entrance be sooner rather than later? The next few weeks will be important to watch to find out just how long Mitch’s leash really is.
